''SUMIRAN'' aA MUSICAL EVENING
Vocalist Anuradha Kuber’s Raag-Maalaa School of Hindustani Music is pleased to announce “Sumiran”, an evening of music to mark the 100th birth anniversary of the legendary Gandhian and Sarvodayi freedom fighter, Late Shri S G Shende. The programme will feature a harmonium recital by the renowned harmonium exponent, Dr Arvind Thatte, accompanied on the tabla by well-known tabla maestro, Pt Yogesh Samsi.
Son of the raj purohit of the royal Scindia family, Shri SG Shende was a dedicated freedom fighter and humanist. He embraced the independence movement in early youth, going on to lead the underground movement in Satara and being incarcerated for several years for his beliefs. Upon release from prison, Shri Shende was drawn to the teachings of Gandhi and went on to establish “Satyaniketan”, a highly-commended ashram school and hostel for adivasi children in Rajur, Nagar district. Later, he became the Director of the bee-keeping section of the Khadi Commission and is credited with having revived and revitalized the Indian Journal of Bee Keeping. Shri Shende received several awards in recognition of his multi-faceted contributions to society, including the prestigious Ba-Bapu Puraskar, awarded by the Poojya Ba Bapu Shatakottar Rajat Jayanti Samiti. The centennial birth anniversary of Shri SG Shende will be commemorated on 24 June 2011 with a harmonium recital by the internationally-acclaimed harmonium soloist and accompanist, Dr Arvind Thatte.
